Hedgehog Class

Welcome to Hedgehog Class!

Hedgehogs - our EYFS Reception Class

Our teacher is Mrs Haskins and Mrs Parker helps us throughout the week as our wonderful teaching assistant!

Our classroom is a 'mistake making, laughter sharing, independence building, brain stretching, mind opening' sort of place, where everyone is welcome!

Our Curriculum

Our Reception children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum, which includes the three prime areas: Communication and Language, Physical development and Personal, social and emotional development. It also includes four specific areas which are: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the world and Expressive arts and design.

Our vision for children in the EYFS is to have children be independent, curious, creative and engaged learners. Our children will be allowed to explore and self-select resources at their own point of interest. This will happen in a stimulating, safe and welcoming environment that builds on the interest of the child, both indoors and outdoors. Your child will be encouraged to build working partnerships with all adults so their needs are represented and heard.

Please find more information related to the EYFS here: Early Years Information page

Throughout the six terms of the year, we follow medium-term planning linked to the EYFS curriculum, created with your child and their interests in mind. We link these to a theme in order to make it easier for the children to remember and to show the link between the term and what we are learning. Below are the first 3 terms of the year. Please click on them for more information:

Term 1 - Marvellous me!

Term 2 - Lights and Festivals

Term 3 - What a wonderful world!

Home Learning and support

We use 'Class Dojo' as a form of communication between teacher and parents, we also use it for positive praise and to earn points towards end of term treats.

You can access Class dojo via this link:

If you would like to support your child at home with their learning throughout the school year, please find some suggestions below for Reception children.

  • Read as many stories as possible with them to develop their love of Reading. Once they start bringing books home with them from school, please read this once a day with your child.
  • Go over their Phonics sounds with them or ask them to point out sounds in books you are reading to/with them.
  • Spot maths in everyday life and talk to your child about it. For example, count forwards when going up the stairs and backwards when coming down. When laying the table for dinner can your child tell you how many knives and forks there are etc.

Some further ideas can be found in the following leaflets, please click on the hyperlinks to access these. There is one for Maths in EYFS RWI set 1 sounds and RWI set 2 and 3 sounds which will be beneficial for both Reception and Year 1.

If you would like any more ideas about how you can support your child at home, please do contact Mrs Haskins or the school office, and we would be more than happy to help! 😊
